What is the Lust of the Eyes in I John 2:16?

What does the Bible mean by “the lust of the eyes”? Is it wrong for us to look at anything and desire it? Or does this mean something else? The phrase “the lust of the eyes” occurs one time in the Bible, and it comes to us in the first epistle of John.
